An Ode to Red Lipstick
I’ve been wearing red lipstick since I was 14 years old. That may seem a bit young to some, but luckily I had a great mom who knew not to stop a girl if something looked good on her. It wasn’t a glaring red, more bricky than bright…and it’s killing me that I can’t remember the name of the shade (it was definitely drugstore and something Chili related but not the iconic MAC lipstick with the same name). I digress.
Beyond the confidence I (still) feel when I wear a red lip, it has also helped me to divert attention away from my eyes when they’re too tired, mask my inner feelings during some emotional rough patches, and reassure me when I look in the mirror that “I am here,” the world can see me. I can think of quite a few times when a day just felt too heavy to face, but I pulled myself up, applied a few coats of Cruella Matte Velvet from Nars and got on with it.
You can’t hide in red nor should you. It’s an intentional choice to wear and declare yourself unafraid of critique, immune to catcalls and preconceived judgements. I think every woman should own a Power Red lipstick, even if it only comes out on holidays and special occasions.
I will say, it can be a process to find your special red. Every shade and formula is so different, so depending on your personal taste and aesthetic your fave may take a minute to find. In a separate post I’ll have an ongoing list of my personal favorite reds in case you’re looking for a starting point of what to try, or are looking for something new to add to your current collection.
If you’ve been holding yourself back, fly free my bird, give it a go and see how you feel. When you cross over into “red lipstick wearer” territory, a whole new you may emerge!
